With ever-smaller seats and carbon-munching engines, flights abroad are losing their appeal. The trendiest destinations are now just a train ride away, which is good news for the environment. ‘It’s striking that for almost 40 years the fashionable destinations for British people were abroad,’ says John Urry, Professor of Sociology at Lancaster University. ‘Now there are indications this is changing.
