Don't get ripped off by rogue window and door installers. Follow these tips from FENSA, a Government Competent Person Scheme for replacement window and door installers"Before agreeing to any works, check that the trader is registered with FENSA (Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme; 020 7645 3700, www.fensa.org.uk) or one of the Government’s other relevant Competent Person Schemes (www.communities.gov.uk), which ensures the installer is qualified to carry out the specified work."Call or check online with the relevant body to ensure they are definitely registered, as some cowboys will claim membership (and occasionally even have official-looking logos on business cards), but are not in fact registered. Make sure that all details of the works, including agreed costs and time frames, are written down and signed by both you and the trader. In addition, any established installer should be able to give you a business card, with full details of their name and company name, registered business address and landline telephone number, not just a mobile."Finally, never feel under pressure for a ‘one-day offer’, don’t pay the whole amount up front, and check the installer has insurance that covers any unintentional damage to yours or your neighbour’s property."Graham Hinett of FENSA
